Planning
Oliver Gibbs can help you plan your carpentry project. Whether you have an idea or completed plans, we are happy to discuss the practical arrangements of your work.
Permissions
Home improvements and extensions may require planning permission or building regulations approval. The rules are complicated, particularly if you live in a listed building or designated area (like a national park or conservation area). You will need to get advice and apply for planning approval at least 8 weeks before the start of works.
A useful summary of when planning or other consent is needed can be viewed here. Consult the Shropshire Council Planning and Building Control department for advice.
Where you are excavating by or working on a wall or structure shared with another property, you may also need to serve your adjoining neighbours with written notice before the work begins. Party wall notices need to be served 2 months before the start of works. A guidance booklet and notice template can be downloaded here.
We can prepare and submit necessary building notices and applications if required.
Professionals
If your project requires an architect or services that we cannot provide, we may be able to suggest local firms that can help you. We do not undertake architectural design, electrical wiring, plumbing, ground works or roof tiling but we work with qualified local crafts-people who we can suggest and coordinate on your behalf.
Preparations
Once you have agreed for Oliver Gibbs to start work, it is important to prepare the work area by making sure it is clear, accessible and safe for the job. You should also take care to protect any fittings and features that are not described in the works. Then the work can begin!
