Reversing the tide of plastic windows

Not many people chose to replace plastic windows with wood windows; the tide flows in the opposite direction. However, one client of Oliver Gibbs Carpentry & Joinery wanted to do just that.

From plastic to wood windows

The client lived in a country property fitted with the ubiquitous white plastic glazed units. He wanted an attractive wooden replacement that would retain the practical properties of his existing windows. Simplicity and openness were the key to design. Oak was the wood of choice.

Plastic bad. Wood good!

Having discussed his requirements, we produced sketches for the client. 9 casement windows, 7 sash windows, french doors and a front door were agreed and crafted by hand in the workshop.

Windows handmade in oak

The windows were made from European Oak and had no glazing bars or moldings. The sash windows were fitted with simple brass catches and spring-balanced opening mechanisms – rather than the traditional sash cords, which are harder to replace. The units were double glazed to modern standards and finished with oil.

As each unit was completed, the old window was removed and the new unit was fitted at the property. The two existing bay windows were removed and flattened, giving the house a cleaner contemporary look. The house was finally re-plastered when all the oak windows and doors were installed.

The attraction of wood windows

Plastic is cheap, but it looks it. Modern double glazed Oak windows need minimal maintenance, are durable, eco-friendly and far more attractive.
