Traditional Barn Doors

Wooden Barn Doors

Stone barns decorate the Shropshire countryside. But getting replacement barn doors is not as simple as popping down to your local DIY store. You would need the services of a crafts person.

In the spring of 2014, Oliver Gibbs Carpentry & Joinery finished a project to convert a listed barn, including the crafting of traditional wooden barn doors.

The barn was part of a listed estate in the grounds of a seventeenth century farm house. Having procured Planning Permission, Oliver Gibbs project managed the restoration. The barn did not have foundations and the back stone wall was leaning. Underpinning the building and constructing stone buttresses could have been very costly. However, an innovative carpentry solution was suggested by our structural engineer. This involved making wooden fins and pinning the structure to a deep concrete slab laid internally.

Once the building was stabilised and drainage installed, external stud walls were built and clad in oak. The wood barn doors were then crafted. The doors were ‘framed ledged and braced’ in design and made in Oak. These were then hung with steel strap hinges to bear the weight of the heavy timber. Finally, a matching wrought iron lock was fitted for security. The yellow oak will grey with age but will still look attractive and should preserve the building for many more years.
