When IKEA shelves won’t do
As much as we Brits love IKEA, sometimes it won’t do.
Take IKEA shelves for example. You may want a unique shelving piece, not a mass produced unit; you might like real oak shelves, not laminate or pine; your shelves may need to fit an irregular space, not a flat wall; your style maybe more traditional British than contemporary Swedish; or assembling flat-pack IKEA shelves may give you a headache!
That is where a carpenter can help.
Bespoke piece
Suppose you don’t want the ‘IKEA look’. You may like the legs of a particular chair, the draws of a favourite cupboard and want a piece to match your book case. A carpenter could design you a bespoke shelving unit incorporating these elements. Take pictures or sketches of the originals. Your carpenter can then advise you on feasibility.
Quality wood
IKEA shelving may appeal for its price and laminate certainly is cheap, but it often chips and wears poorly. By contrast, wood matures well and does not bow as easily with heavy use. Even low grade pine can be finished with a variety of stains and varnishes to look top quality. Wood is therefore often more cost effective than laminate.
Perfect fit
Another advantage of using a carpenter is that they can make shelves to fit uneven or awkward spaces. This is done by carefully scribing the shelving – tracing the line of the wall against the piece – and then cutting and sanding the shelf to shape. IKEA wood shelves may not fit your old Shropshire property with its uneven walls.
